A Biblical, Christ-filled word to bless your lives.
Welcome to “Word from The Center” MONDAY, a devotional word from the Center of our faith, Jesus Christ, reflections from His Word. I’m Gregory Seltz. Today’s verse is from Luke 24:44-49, where the Bible says,
He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.”
45 Then he opened their minds, so they could understand the Scriptures. 46 He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”
WAIT… FOR POWER FROM ON HIGH!
After the incredible event of the resurrection of the crucified Jesus, the Bible records visible appearances and dialogues that He had with His disciples and followers. The very message of Jesus, His life, His death, and His resurrection recorded in the words of the Bible is the culmination of God’s eternal solution for a world that is mired in its sinfulness, overcome by its guilt, and devolving into death every day. What an incredible joy to know that there is a solution for the troubles we face, for the people we love, for the communities in which we live.
Being here in Washington D.C., I run into people weekly who are touting their solutions for this or that. In fact, they often say that this new program, or this new policy, or even this new leader… that will change everything. What they fail to realize is the difference between “power, our power” and “power from on high.” The disciples in our text had tried to get Jesus to bless their agenda on things that they thought really mattered. We do the same. They finally realized, and we need to as well, that Jesus ministry and mission was to deliver a new Kingdom on His terms alone for their very life and salvation. In the middle of our broken solutions, Jesus invites us all to “Wait for His power, His message”… “receive it on His terms.” That’s Jesus invitation for a lasting solution for our broken hearts, our broken lives.
To daily strive to live virtuous lives, to work to pass righteous laws, to seek temporal justice, all these things have a purpose. They help us to live in a humane, civil society. But the main purpose of fighting for those things is to maintain the freedom to proclaim the work of Jesus Christ so that ALL might hear and be saved. With power from on high, with a Word from the resurrected Savior, we have Good News to share and a solution that all need to hear… And thank God He utilizes us in all this too!
PRAYER: Dear Lord Jesus, it’s hard to realize that our solutions to the big problems of life don’t work in the end. Give us faith to receive the blessings of your Gospel and to put them to work in the lives of those we love. Give us courage to fight for the right to share that too, especially for those we love. AMEN.
