Welcome to “Word from The Center” MONDAY, a devotional word from the Center of our faith, Jesus Christ, reflections from His Word. I’m Gregory Seltz. Today’s verse is from Galatians 5:1, where the Bible says,
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
In the United States, on the 4th of July the whole country celebrates… freedom and liberty. Over 200 years ago, this nation was founded on those core ideas. You might say that our birth certificate was the Declaration of Independence. It’s not very long. It only has 1321 words, but God is mentioned four times. While they wanted independence from England, they also declared their dependence on God, and their interdependence upon each other. Remember the words, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” The closing words of their Declaration solemnly state: “With a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes & our sacred Honor.”
Liberty, Freedom… it’s the yearning of the human spirit in general. We were created to live freely with God, freely in Him for each other. The problem is that personally our reality is not one of inner freedom. It’s one of sin, guilt, and struggle. And, even in our politics and culture, the impulse is to control and even enslave. Free to serve, free to live freely for others… that’s how it should be, but the problem is that we are often our own worst enemy to actually make that happen!
That’s why our Scripture reading for today IS SO IMPORTANT TO YOUR LIFE. If freedom is something FOR WHICH YOUR HEART ACHES, if freedom is a deep yearning in your very soul, there is only one place to finally resolve that quest. Real freedom can only come from God, receiving His freedom that comes from being His Son, or His daughter by Grace through faith! God has indeed made a “rebirth” certificate possible for all who put their faith in Jesus!
Our reading for today talks about A FREEDOM BEYOND ALL OTHERS, that Jesus Christ made possible for all. It’s a freedom that one can “live in” now and forever; a freedom that can’t be taken away by governments or enemies; a freedom that can be shared with others no matter who they are or where they have been. If you love freedom, as I do, doesn’t this CLAIM IN CHRIST, FROM CHRIST challenge you? Doesn’t it make you want to know more?
Because of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, you and I have been “SET FREE” from sin, guilt, even death to live freely for others by faith in Him. Paul is inviting you and me to root our hopes and dreams in the freedom that comes from Him alone. Let it be the confidence you have in the work you do today. May it be the motivation you need to serve others in His Name. May His guarantee of eternal Freedom that lasts be the center of our hope no matter how the winds of politics, economics, and culture blow.
PRAYER: Dear Lord Jesus, please strengthen our faith. Help us to realize that all of the freedoms that we might possess in this world are ultimately nothing compared to the freedom that comes from knowing you as our Lord and Savior, following you in the obedience and service that comes from Faith.
