A Biblical, Christ-filled word to bless your lives.

Welcome to “Word from The Center” MONDAY, a devotional word from the Center of our faith, Jesus Christ, reflections from His Word. I’m Gregory Seltz. Today’s verse is from John 3:1-17 where Jesus says,

God so loved the world that He sent His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.

Chuck Colson, once a hatchet-man/political operative whose later life was transformed by faith in Jesus Christ, said, “Life changes when you realize that it is eternal.” Exactly! His statement embraced the biblical call to repentance and the realization that true, meaningful, abundant life is a gift from God beyond the ability of any human being’s works. When you realize that “real” life is beyond your control, when you realize that for those who trust in God, it’s eternal—even death itself is but a passage way to unending life with Him—that’s when you begin to really live here and now as well.

Pauline Jacobi, 92 years young, was a woman who knew this. She knew that her life with Jesus is eternal. And she also knew that that truth changes the way she gets to live each and every day. But she didn’t know how much that way of thinking and living would transform a “very bad, very dangerous” situation to one that might have eternal possibilities for her and for her assailant. That’s right, I said, “assailant.” Let me explain. Jacobi had just finished shopping at Walmart. She loaded her groceries into her car. She got in to drive home, and suddenly, a man with a gun jumped in the car on the passenger side. He threatened her. He demanded all her money, or else!

But she responded… “I’m not going to give you my money,” In fact. She told him “no” three times. Then she started to talk to him. “As quick as you kill me I’ll go to heaven and you’ll go to hell… Jesus is in this car and he goes with me everywhere I go.” [1]

That trust in Jesus, that knowledge that life, her life, is eternal, it amazingly even saved her life from a robber that day and may have saved his life forever too. (See her tell her story here

But that truth calls you and me to faith today too. Life is precious. Life is sacred. And, God himself wants you to know the power of living that “eternal” life with Him right now. How do I know that God wants that for you? Just read John 3:16 again and take it to heart every day!

PRAYER: Dear Lord Jesus, we clamor for so many things in this life. But we forget that life is not just here and now, it’s eternal. Give us wisdom to focus on the eternal reality of life. Then strengthen our faith to live with that awareness here and now in all we do. AMEN.
