Devotion: Monday, October 8, 2018

Welcome to “Word from The Center” MONDAY, a devotional word from the Center of our faith, Jesus Christ, with reflections from His Word. I’m Gregory Seltz, Today’s verse is from Hebrews 2:14-18, where the Bible says,

14 Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— 15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death……. 17 For this reason he had to be made like them,[a] fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. 18 Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

It’s Going to Be Alright when the Lord Jesus Has Your Back!

In my service here in Washington D.C., I’m privileged to work with many wonderful people. Among those groups are our Chaplains and people in the Armed Forces. Other people on the Hill might be fighting for a cause or fighting for their constituency, but those in the Armed Forces are fighting for us all. There’s something special about that. Throughout my ministry, I’ve been fortunate to minister to those in the military or those serving in law enforcement. They have to be prepared to give the ultimate sacrifice on any given day so that you and I might live in peace. When I used to talk with those who serve, I would often ask them, “How do get up the courage to face each day knowing the challenges that you might face?” They would talk about their training and the leadership of their troop or their department. But, when they got right down to it, they often said that their partners made the difference, the person who was fighting right next to them, the one who “had their back.” When you could count on that, you could face the challenges that came each day.

When the writer of Hebrews says that Jesus “too shared in their humanity,” he uses a word that describes a real flesh and blood partnership. It’s so close and so real. There is nothing stronger in the world than knowing that God took on your flesh and blood. He took upon himself your troubles and sins, and through the cross and resurrection He not only “has your back,” He saves you and gives you life as a gift. Whatever you face today, you can face it. Why? Not in your strength, not in your power, not even in the relationships you hold dear…, but in the strength of the one who can always help. That’s the strength to help one another too. When Jesus has your back in all things, you and I can even start caring for each other better too.

Put that partnership to work. Read and learn His Word. Grow in your relationship with Him, and watch all the other things in your life find their proper place. God bless!

PRAYER: Dear Lord Jesus, it’s a powerful thing to know that you “have our backs.” Even more, you love and care for us with an everlasting love. Help us to grow closer to you through your Word, by the power of the Spirit. AMEN.
