Abortion Is a Biblical/Political Issue

Soft people in the church, those who are double minded and wish to run from the truth, will tell pastors not to preach about abortion. The disconnect is real, surely in the LCMS too. These folks will tell pastors not to bring political issues into the pulpit, and far too many otherwise faithful pastors comply. But, of course, as a popular meme says, abortion is distinctly a biblical issue.

Abortion takes the life of a child (Fifth Commandment) and is a sin against the God of creation. When we deny the human life of the child in the womb, we deny our Lord Jesus, who made His home in the womb of Mary. Abortion, of course, takes the life of another human being, but it also puts in grave jeopardy the faith of those who claim to be pro-choice. No man can serve two masters. The one who sides with those who call themselves pro-choice is in fact making the world a friend and God an enemy.

But then, humorously, the people of the world take an opposite tack. They say that abortion is moral issue, but not a political issue. They say you can preach whatever you want in your churches, but you can't legislate morality. Haven't you ever heard about the separation of church and state? If you don't like murder, then don't murder, goes the logic, never mind the life of the baby, which we will never talk about, as we cover it up with euphemisms about choice and healthcare.

Is abortion a political issue or is it a biblical issue? It is, of course, both. God says, "Thou shall not murder," which makes murder and harming our neighbor a sin. But no one would say you can't legislate morality when it comes to murder, would they? Would anyone say that you might call stealing a sin, but you can't make a law against that sin because there is a separation of church and state?

What's clear is there is a darkness at work. Don't talk about abortion at church, because it's a political issue. Don't talk about abortion in politics, because, it's a religious issue. How convenient, and how terribly evil. So, yes, dear Christian, talk about abortion, and talk about the little children. Pastors, speak about life from the pulpit, speak of the sin of abortion and the precious value of little children. Pastors and people speak about abortion in politics, for these children need advocates, and that is our calling.
